Antique 19th century French Ferdinand Barbedienne gilded bronze and red marble figural inkstand. Featuring a bronze bust of a bearded male figure, likely Dionysius. After the original ancient bust found in Herculaneum.
The model is occasionally, alternately identified as Plato or Poseidon. Barbedienne on the back of the shoulders. Mounted on a marble column.Surmounted on a rouge griotte marble base with two rectangular recesses for writing / calligraphy tools. To the front is a hinged bronze inkwell with glass insert.
